BIS Alumna has been selected for the inaugural Schwarzman Scholars Programme 2016

British International School HCMC Alumna, Tara Subba, receives inaugural Schwarzman Scholarship 2016

On Monday, 11th January 2016, the Schwarzman Scholars Programme announced the first scholarship winners to be chosen for one of the most selective postgraduate programme in the world. The British International School, Ho Chi Minh City were incredibly proud to learn that Tara Subba, a BIS Alumna, has been selected for the programme.

Schwarzman Scholars is a highly selective global leadership programme created in collaboration with a number of prestigious universities including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, and Tsinghua in Beijing. Drawing on the best academic institutions around the world, the innovative master’s degree programme provides scholars with unparalleled learning opportunities, designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders for the challenges of the future. The inaugural class of Scholars will receive a fully funded scholarship to study at Tsinghua University beginning in August 2016.

Mr. Schwarzman, chairman and co-founder of the Blackstone Group, the private equity and investment giant, started the programme with a goal of identifying, as he put it, “your best guess as future leaders of the world.”

The selections committee is composed of CEOs, heads of state and university presidents, among others, who evaluate factors including academic ability, leadership potential, ability to anticipate emerging trends and a desire to explore other cultures.

Ms.  Subba was selected from a pool of over 3,000 competitive applicants from around the world. Of those selected, 44 percent are from the United States, 21 percent are from China and 35 percent hail from the rest of the world.

Ms. Subba, who graduated from BIS in 2013, is originally from Indonesia and at 20 years old she is one of the youngest selected for this programme.  During her years at BIS her teachers remarked that she displayed exceptional leadership potential and extraordinary talent.

After graduating at BIS, Ms. Subba entered Durham University as an undergraduate reading Politics and Philosophy. She has worked closely with Durham Amnesty International and founded the St. Mary’s College Freedom Association. Her involvement in promoting infrastructural reconstruction and initiating cross-border humanitarian relief efforts in Nepal has become a catalyst for sustainable development in emerging countries and in their integration into the global community.

In a recent communication with British International School, HCMC, Ms. Subba reflected on her years at the school, “I would not have thought of applying if I didn’t go through my Senior Leadership Team years at BIS, there’s something in me which always reminds me that my leadership drive stems from my time with the BIS SLT, and from being inspired by the people who guided me, family and teachers.”

Looking towards her own future, Ms. Subba aims to hold a ministerial position in the Indonesian government or to work with the United Nations.
