Dr Bui Tran Phuong is a researcher, teacher and former Rector of Hoa Sen University (Ho Chi Minh City). She has a long history in teaching and researching on modern and contemporary Vietnam as well as on Vietnamese culture. Her work deals with topics including the history of education and intellectuals, the history of colonization, the history of women and gender and the emergence of a feminine elite linked to colonial education. A Doctor in contemporary history, she defended, in 2008, a thesis entitled “Vietnam 1918-1945, gender and modernity: the emergence of new perceptions and experimentations.” Her presentation at Salon Saigon will be an adaptation of this thesis. The conference will be held in Vietnamese with English translation.
