5 Pro Tips To Get That Cloudy Look Off Your Glass Wine Decanter

A glass wine decanter makes a statement in any dining room or wine cellar, but if you find yours has lost its clarity over time, it may not be as fancy-looking as it once was. Luckily, you can do something about that without having to purchase a new decanter. Here are five pro tips to get that cloudy look off your glass wine decanter and bring back its shine with little effort.

1) Clean Your Decanter Regularly

When you run your glass wine decanter through a dishwasher cycle, it’s very easy for soap residue to build up inside. Over time, that residue will cloud your decanter and make it harder for you to tell how much wine is left in it. If you don’t clean your decanter regularly, it can also start to smell like mold or mildew.

2) Try Not To Chill the Wine

When pouring wine, avoid ice or chilled water. This can make your wine too cold and cause it to lose its flavor and aroma. Instead, stick with a room-temperature glass of water when serving your guests a glass of wine. When serving yourself at home, you can chill wine for up to an hour in advance—but don’t keep it there for longer than that or you’ll end up with flat-tasting wines that lack any kind of character.

3) Add 1 Teaspoon Baking Soda, Then Fill It Up with Vinegar

If you have a glass wine decanter that’s stopped being crystal clear, you can use a little science to clear it up quickly. Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda, then fill it up with vinegar. Give it a swirl, and let sit for 5 minutes. Strain out all of the residue using cheesecloth or a coffee filter. Then wash and rinse thoroughly before using! This method works best on acrylic and glass containers; porcelain might get damaged by all of those bubbles. Click

4) Boil Some Water and Dump it in

This tip may seem weird, but it’s not just an old wives’ tale. The process of heating and then cooling glass can help remove some haziness from a decanter or carafe. Just place a quart or two of water in your container, bring it to a boil, let it cool for 5-10 minutes (depending on how cloudy your decanter is), and then empty it out through a filter like cheesecloth or coffee filter.

5) Use a Microfiber Cloth

The best way to clean a glass wine decanter is with a microfiber cloth. Not only do microfiber cloths scratch much less than other types of fabrics, but they’re also much more absorbent and will pick up even minute particles that won’t wipe off with a normal washcloth. Just make sure you use an unscented one so your wine doesn’t pick up any smells from your cleaning product! For extra stubborn spots, try soaking a small corner of your cloth in white vinegar before wiping down the inside. You can even toss it in your dishwasher on its own cycle (with no soap) to keep it fresh and stain-free.
