Oi’s very own “Postcards in Vietnam” columnist, Bridget March, is pleased to launch her first book, “A Week in Hoi An”, an artist’s guide to the beautiful World Heritage Town. There are over 60 drawings and watercolor sketches plus notes about its history and culture.
The 52-page book is a visual story of the time Bridget spent in Hoi An in December 2012. Always accompanied by her Moleskine Japanese album and watercolor field box, Bridget captured the things that interested her and made notes beside the sketches.
Part guidebook, part souvenir, and all beautiful, the book captures the colors and sights of Hoi An, everything from the ubiquitous hand-made lanterns and tailor shops to late night Chinese chess games by candlelight and the nearby Cham Islands.
One reviewer said of the book:
This book is both a celebration of the history and culture of Hoi An and a brief guide to its heritage. It makes a unique souvenir of Hoi An and is small enough to carry around when touring the town. The watercolours and text cover the buildings of the town and the surrounding countryside and go well beyond the endless tailors and lantern shops that dominate Hoi An so much. The watercolours faithfully capture the light and colour of the town and invite you to slow down and look at the landscape with an artist’s eye. There’s even a list of all the paint colours used if you want to have a go yourself. Recommended to anyone travelling to or just returned from Hoi An who wants something that can continually remind them of their visit to this beautiful part of Vietnam.
In honor of the book launch, The VinGallery is exhibiting some of Bridget’s original watercolors found in the book as well as some of her newer acrylic pieces.
The exhibition runs from September 7-14. Original works are available for purchase, as well as signed copies of ‘A Week in Hoi An’ by Bridget March.
