What: Rock Lottery
Where: Cargo Bar
About: Non-profit organization Anh Duong-Sai Gon is bringing Rock Lottery to Vietnam. Interested musicians can sign up online by sending their info and what instrument they would like to play by July 14. Chosen musicians will be announced on July 19. Names will be picked randomly, and these musicians become a band. They get six weeks or so to put together a set of original songs. The final performance will take place at Cargo Bar on August 28. Proceeds will go to the Little Rose Shelter, a refuge for young girls who have been sexually abused or trafficked.

About: Craig Thomas Gallery is celebrating its fifth anniversary with Coming of Age, a group exhibition featuring paintings, sculptures and installations by 14 Vietnamese artists. The artists on show include those who have been with the gallery since the beginning, including Lieu Nguyen, Lim Khim Ka Ty, Tran Quoc Tuan, and Bui Tien Tuan, and those with whom CTG will be working with in the near future, such as established sculptor Bui Hai Son, expressionist painter Doan Hoang Lam and digital painter and illustrator Khoa Le.

Innovation-and-Technology-Camp

July 28 - August 2
What: Innovation and Technology Camp
Where: International School of Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC), 28 Vo Truong Toan, D2
About: Innovation and Technology Camp, hosted by Everest Education and ISHCMC, features workshops in game design, robotics and filmmaking. Game Design (open to students from Grades 3-6) will expose students to the logic behind computer programming and provide an opportunity to learn basic coding principles and design their own interactive game. Robotics (open to students from Grades 6-12) will allow students to design, build and program their robots using motors and rotation sensors. The students will apply basic concepts in Science and Math to create their robot and prepare it for the final challenge: a sumo wrestling competition. Filmmaking (open to students from Grades 6-12) will enable students to learn techniques for storyboarding, cinematography, directing and editing. The program places special emphasis on storytelling and developing the students’ ability to craft a visual narrative. The program is open to students from all schools. Space is limited and participation will be based on first-come, first-serve. Individual workshops cost USD250 and USD450 for full six-day camp. Tuition covers workshop costs and daily lunches.

What: Mind, Flesh, Matter
Where: San Art, 3 Me Linh, Binh Thanh
About: This exhibition focuses on relationships between mind, body and the physical environment. Nguyen Van Du’s large-scale canvases reveal a ‘controlled horror in slaughter’, thick with gestures of oil in red and pink “as if his brush is a knife of destruction”. Le Phi Long depicts the exploitation of the land and the upheaving of ancestral communities for socio-economic progress by means of sculpture, photography, performance and drawing. Lai Dieu Ha uses modes of theatre, prop and the dramatization of the self that are inherent methods of psychodrama therapy to voice her artistic approach to the occurrence and effects of trauma.

What: Conjuring Capital Group Exhibition

About: Features works of contemporary artists who reflect diverse localities of historical and cultural difference and innovation, mediated via video, sculpture, installation, painting and drawing. Participating artists include: Adriana Bustos (Argentina); Than Sok (Cambodia); Sudarshan Shetty (India); Nguyen Hong Ngoc (Vietnam); Hank Willis Thomas and Christopher Myers (US). This exhibition is curated by Zoe Butt and forms part of Conscious Realities, a three-year project sponsored by a network partnership between the Prince Claus Fund and San Art.

About: Battle of The Year (BOTY) is a day-long festival of hip-hop and breakdance culture. About: For kids between four and 10, this art camp is designed to expose students to different art techniques in a supportive environment where they can build their confidence and skills as artists. It is also an opportunity to explore and investigate different mediums in order to unleash their creativity. Students will discover how they can draw, paint and build crafts using charcoal, inks, acrylics, watercolors, soft pastels, painting, papier mache and “found objects.”

Da-Nang-International-Marathon

What: Danang International Marathon
Where: Danang International Marathon Expo, Danang City
About: Da Nang International Marathon (DNIM) is the first ever IAAF-AIMS certified marathon course in Danang. The race includes three distances: Marathon 42.195 km; Half Marathon 21.097 km, and Fun Run five km. Besides the race day, there will be activities such as tour packages, a sports expo and gala dinner for runners to enjoy and explore the city and other tourist destinations located nearby. More than 4,500 international and local runners are expected to join in this year’s DNIM.
